RIVERTON, UTAH – US Senate candidate Trent Staggs released the following statement in response to yesterday’s news that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) would be stepping down as Senate Republican leader in November. Staggs announced he wouldn’t support McConnell two weeks ago, and called on his fellow candidates in the Utah Senate race to do the same.
“I've been leading the charge in Utah with United States Senator Mike Lee against McConnell, and pledged not to vote for him. With him out of the way, now we can focus on getting real America First leadership in the Senate!”
With an approval rating of just 6 percent, McConnell is the least popular national political figure in the country.
The first candidate to declare for the 2024 Senate, Staggs has received the endorsements of Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Kari Lake, Kash Patel, Ric Grenell, Utah Parents United, and many others. Staggs has spent the last 11 years in elected office, seven of them as mayor of Riverton. In 2023, he was named Best Mayor in Utah.
