RIVERTON, UTAH – US Senate candidate Trent Staggs this week pledged that he would vote against Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) as Senate Republican leader next year. This is following a series of high-profile votes where McConnell voted to support the Democrats’ America Last agenda, such as the recent $93 billion war-funding bill - even though a majority of his Republican senate colleagues opposed the bill. With an approval rating of just 6 percent, McConnell is the least popular national political figure in the country.
Staggs’ pledge indicates how McConnell – now on his seventh term – has abdicated his constitutionally mandated responsibilities, fiscal responsibility, and protecting conservative principles in general. In an interview with The Blaze this week, Staggs said:
“The Washington establishment has failed us. Utah deserves a senator willing to push back on the establishment and get things done. I am asking the entire field of candidates in Utah to come together and commit to not support McConnell, but rather support America first leadership that believes in the principles of federalism. We owe it to the voters to let them know where we stand.”
Staggs calls upon his primary rivals — John Curtis, Jeremy Friedbaum, Brent Hatch, Brian Jenkins, Carolyn Phippen, Josh Randall, Chandler Tanner, Jason Walton, Clark White, Brad Wilson — to sign his pledge to support new Senate Republican leadership.
The first candidate to declare for the 2024 Senate, Staggs has received the endorsements of Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Kari Lake, Kash Patel, Ric Grenell, Utah Parents United, and many others. Staggs has spent the last 11 years in elected office, seven of them as mayor of Riverton. In 2023, he was named Best Mayor in Utah.
