Today Mayor Trent Staggs created a Contract With Utah, a seven-point campaign promise for more responsible government. These points are:
- Ban the trading of individual stocks by members of Congress and their immediate family members.
- Ban lobbyists donations to candidates and members of Congress.
- Ban members of Congress and high-ranking federal government officials from lobbying or obtaining government contracts for at least 10 years after leaving their posts.
- Limit members of the Senate to two terms and members of the House to three terms.
- Assure that if the government shuts down, members of Congress receive no pay and are ineligible for backpay.
- Return to a regular appropriations process and oppose all omnibus spending bills.
- Pass a balanced budget amendment.
Mayor Staggs' contract was covered by The Daily Caller here. He told them, “Right now, Washington is broken. Fixing it starts with getting special interests out of Congress. I’m making sure Utah voters know exactly where I stand, and I’m asking all others running for the Senate to do the same.”
