Trent Staggs was elected mayor of Riverton, Utah, on November 7, 2017, after serving four years on the Riverton City Council. During his time as mayor he has worked tirelessly to lower taxes and fees, improve transportation and oversee a responsible city government. He will do the same as Salt Lake County Mayor.
As your next County Mayor, Trent will focus on three main areas:
These three areas have been lacking under the current administration, which is why we need Trent in office to make sure that they are finally addressed with his proven experience and track record.
Trent has demonstrated the leadership necessary to manage everything from small business to Fortune 500 organizations for over 20 years. He will use that experience to not just innovate county government, through lower costs and greater value for residents, but will also improve the overall quality of life for Salt Lake County residents.
Trent received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Utah in Political Science and Economics and received an MBA from the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. He currently resides in Riverton with his wife, Alisha, and their two children.
I am not a career politician, but a hardworking professional and businessowner with over 20 years of experience running and managing successful Fortune 500 to small and medium sized enterprises. I consciously chose to serve in local politics, because that is where the biggest impacts can and should be made. The genius of our form of government, as it was intended, is that almost all of the important decisions are made at the local level of our communities. Communities lead, politicians follow.
County leadership for the past several years has intentionally and significantly expanded their role, restricting the ability of cities to serve residents, and ultimately restricting the freedom and liberties of its people. These leaders have:
Unfortunately, my experience and the experience of so many in working with Salt Lake County, has proven that the county layer of government is too often unresponsive and fails to listen to the people they have been elected to represent. They have consistently insulated themselves while exapanding control, increasing the tax burden on each of us, and making it more difficult for local communities to govern themselves.
Not only is the current county administration not listening to residents, it has not offered a vision for the county, allowing haphazard development to occur without adequate infrastructure and open space.
As Riverton Mayor, I have cut millions of dollars in taxes while increasing services for residents. I have also led in planning with neighboring communities for smart, sustainable growth, ensuring adquate infrastructure and open spaces. That is the type of leadership we need in Salt Lake County. Leadership that listens and delivers results.
That is why I’m now running for Salt Lake County Mayor.
